The surviving members of Nirvana reunited for a surprise performance at the FireAid benefit concert in Los Angeles, California last night (January 30th), with the grunge icons having hit the stage to play a few classic songs alongside guest musicians St. Vincent, Kim Gordon, Joan Jett, and Violet Grohl.

The four-song set at the KIA Forum in Inglewood marked the first public performance from Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear as Nirvana since 2018.

To help raise funds for Los Angeles wildfire relief efforts, they first dipped into Nevermind’s Breed with the help of St. Vincent on vocals and guitar. They dropped into Bleach’s heavy “School” with Kim Gordon, while Joan Jett jumped up to hit a punky “Territorial Pissings.” Then, Grohl’s daughter Violet joined her dad and the rest of Nirvana to deliver a version of In Utero’s closing “All Apologies” – Gordon played bass for the closer, while Novoselic played accordion.

Back in 2014, Grohl, Novoselic and Smear had reunited for a secret, 19-song set at Brooklyn’s St. Vitus Bar. St. Vincent, Gordon and Jett had likewise helped the band throughout the night, as well as Dinosaur Jr.’s J. Mascis. Grohl, Novoselic and Smear had likewise performed a handful of Nirvana songs with Jett in 2018.

Last night’s FireAid benefit concert was staged to help raise funds for relief efforts, in the wake of the devastating wildfires that hit Los Angeles throughout January.

The concert was staged at both the KIA Forum and the nearby Intuit Dome, and likewise featured performances from  Green Day and Billie Eilish, Red Hot Chili Peppers, No Doubt, Joni Mitchell, Olivia Rodrigo, Stevie Nicks, the Black Crowes and many more.
