We’ve learned a lot from Maynard James Keenan over the years. Even just a couple of weeks ago, the TOOL, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer frontman gave us some in-depth details on vocal technique, wineries and his love for Ozzy Osbourne on The Allison Hagendorf Show. But comedian Bert Kreischer may have unlocked the key to all things Keenan by asking the alt-metal icon the no-brainer question no one seems to have been brave enough to ask these past 30 years: What’s your favorite tool?
The goofball Q came up during an episode of Kreischer’s long-running Bertcast, with the episode also hitting the host’s love of Tool, how Keenan’s aunt put him onto Black Sabbath, the next round of Sessanta dates, jiu-jitsu, comedy, pets and more.
Mid-way through the talk, though, Kreischer asked the literal tool-related question on behalf of his daughter, and massive TOOL fan, Ila, which yielded a grimace and a laugh out of Keenan. Then the singer confirmed his favorite: “A battery-operated pneumatic nail gun.”
“I remember when it was like a cannister and it would clog up, and get all fucked up,” he said, while mimicking nail gun sounds. “The newer ones… you can charge the battery…You can get some shit done.”
Kresicher concurred that the invention of the nail gun was a “game changer,” adding that “you can build a house so much quicker.” Keenan capped this part of the chat with a sly, “So, does that answer your fucking question?”
You can see the light-hearted moment around the 26:00-minute mark of the video up above.
In other news, TOOL recently revealed their plans to host their very own destination festival, “TOOL Live in the Sand,” next March in the Dominican Republic. The two-day event will also feature sets from Primus, Mastodon, Coheed and Cambria, Eagles of Death Metal, King’s X, Fishbone and more.
