Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Coming off the gore-anticipating teaser trailer for Ice Nine Kills’ Terrifier-themed “A Work of Art” single, Spencer Charnas and his much-loved metalcore outfit have now unveiled the full freaky thing for all to see. And damn, does it get vicious.
As previously reported, INK’s nod to the Terrifier franchise’s sadistic-but-ever-smiling Art the Clown was premiered alongside a screening of Terrifier 3 at last month’s Fantastic Fest in Texas, and the mini-film also screened alongside the film at select theaters last night (October 10th).
Under the direction of longtime visual collaborator Jensen Noen, the new, ultra-meta video finds folks heading into an old theater to catch a killer Ice Nine set. Before the show starts, though, Sirius XM host Jose Mangin and his pregnant partner argue about whether they should step inside, with one of them quipping: “It’s an Ice Nine Kills concert…what are they going to do, hack you up into little pieces?” And then all hell breaks loose.
The vid captures a manic INK performance, with Charnas leading the charge as the band rip into their new tune. When a round of weapons start making their way through the venue, though, the crowd-killing in the pit gets decidedly more extreme than your average hardcore show. As Charnas puts it up front in the speed-forward, melody-charged metalcore blazer, “no one gets out alive.”
As you might imagine, considering the nature of the crossover, Art the Clown (a.k.a. actor David Howard Thornton), also slinks into the venue with his garbage bag of tricks in tow. Without spoiling too much, he delivers one of the gnarliest moments of the mini-movie after Mangin’s partner goes into labor on the dancefloor. System of a Down/Seven Hours After Violet member Shavo Odadjian also stops by to thwack the bass, just as Art arguably leans into his horniest performances yet.
“Creating a track for Terrifier 3 is like stepping into the ultimate horror playground,” Charnas said in a statement. “The film and our new single, ‘A Work of Art,’ reflect the same twisted, unrelenting energy that fans of both Ice Nine Kills and the Terrifier franchise thrive on. And having our music video play in theaters after the movie at special screenings last night was the ultimate honor and the best way to pay homage to the cinematic terror that has inspired me and this band.”
He continued: “The extended cut of the video marks a new era of INK-related terror, but what that means shall remain in my nightmares for now. Psychos, we present to you what may well be our most glorious and goresome offering yet, sure to leave you both tongue-tied and terrified – ‘A Work of Art’”
The “A Work of Art” video also co-stars Catherine Corcoran (Terrifier), Leah Voysey (Terrifier 2), Sirius XM’s Vincent Rockwell and Terry Kiser (Weekend at Bernie’s). There are plenty of Terrifier and Silver Scream easter eggs throughout the 15-minute short film, which continues the story-within-a-story narrative structuring of INK’s Silver Scream saga thus far. The “A Work of Art” single is likewise streaming now, while Terrifier 3’s theatrical run entered wider release today (October 11th).
As previously reported, Revolver recently released a special edition magazine around the rise of Ice Nine Kills. The issue includes an in-depth interview with Charnas on the history of his band, a look back on the making of the act’s 2018 breakthrough The Silver Scream, and also includes a run-down of the horror films that changed Charnas’ life (including Terrifier).
