The worlds of Barbie and GWAR aren’t that dissimilar, if you think about it. Both brands have a thing for pink, though in the case of our favorite Scumdogs, that may have more to do with the viscera they’re splattering our way every show. Regardless, the metal band are saluting the good folks at Mattel with a fully revamped take on the Barbie movie’s “I’m Just Ken.”
Dubbed “We’re Just GWAR,” the pseudo-ballad was premiered through the AV Club’s newly re-launched “Undercover Series,” with the Ryan Goslin redo marking GWAR’s seventh appearance on the web program.
Though flanked by a beheaded Barbie and an arsenal of magenta-to-neon-pink guitars, Balsac the Jaws of Death actually kicks this one off on a tiny keyboard, while vocalist Blöthar the Berserker tenderly croons about how they’re still “the band that spews/just too gross, too much for most.”
The self-proclaimed “shock rock superstars” saucily chunk through the rest of the power ballad with putrid aplomb, and you can let it bring a tear to your eye via the player up above.
“We’ve been fans of Ryan Gosling since the Mickey Mouse Club days, and like most terrifying intergalactic heavy metal superstars, we simply adore musical theater. This just made sense,” the Berserker explained of the performance.
As previously reported, GWAR are back on the road in September with Brujeria, fellow Barbie-appreciators BRAT and Cancer Christ, and likewise kickoff their “The Stone Aged” tour with Dark Funeral and Squid Pisser the next month. You’ll find the full details here.
