Two years on from Drug Church’s heavy Hygiene, the hardcore-coded Albany, New York, rockers are back with another full-length — and it’s apparently gonna wreck us. Reason being, the band are teasing the upcoming PRUDE with a new single called “Demolition Man.”
Steered by Patrick Kindlon’s gruffly philosophic lyrics — and delivered through a music video co-starring I Think You Should Leave actor Biff Wiff — “Demolition Man” bounce-moshes our way to contrast the goal-focused nature of the animal kingdom and the general listlessness of humankind. A terrier, for instance, is programmed to chase rats. Us? Well, life often leaves us rudderless as we try to find our place in the world.
Sonically, the track finds Drug Church doing what they do best: chunking up earworm Nineties alterna-hooks with a hardcore finesse. Despite the lyrical drive of “Demolition Man,” the group are certain of their chosen path.
“Doing something really leftfield isn’t really our ambition,” Kindlon explained in a statement. “The goal is to put out good records that sound like we do — we’re not trying to do an OK Computer. But I do think that when you just do something well, you hit a point where people think they have a complete understanding of who you are.”
Produced and engineered alongside longtime collaborator Jon Markson, the 10-song PRUDE is described as “sad storytelling,” with Kindlon examining “individualism, frustration with mob mentality, this idea that maybe community isn’t what it’s sold as,” and more.
