Now that Ghost’s lore-building RITE HERE RITE NOW movie has received its official streaming debut, the occult rockers have broken loose one of the film’s most iconic scenes for YouTube. If you hadn’t caught it yet, the campy, Saturday Morning-nostalgic animated segment around fan fave “Mary on a Cross” is online now.
Mashing together Hanna-Barbera’s cutesy character design, the psychedelic backgrounds of The Archies-era Filmation, and Ralph Bakshi-style subversion, the Sixties-esque animated fever dream first finds the titular Mary walking out of a Sunset Strip nightclub and hopping behind the wheel of her sportscar. A bug-eyed Papa Nihil quickly gets run over by Mary, but pulls a T-1000 while desperately clinging to the car as it whips through the Hollywood Hills.
Without spoiling too much, it only gets worse for Papa Nihil from there, as the vid devolves into a slapstick farce in the mold of both Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? and Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood, with a Universally tragic love story tagged onto the end. Mercifully for most of us — yet tragic for a few of you, surely — we do not have to see a cel-drawn reinterpretation of Papa tickling someone “internally,” per the wink-wink lyrics.
