Deftones dropped into a rarity for their Australian fans over the weekend, bringing a cover of the Smiths’ “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” back into the setlist after a two-year absence.
Lord knows it wasn’t the first time Deftones have performed the Moz-and-Marr-penned classic out in public — they hit it four times in 2024, including their back-to-back Coachella appearances. But considering these handsome devils first delivered their Smiths salute over 20 years ago — the cut having appeared on 2005’s B-Sides and Rarities comp, and later on the 2011 Covers collection — it was still a big deal for the group to have performed the piece at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena.
The night also brought a number of recent private music tracks to the stage, as well as a clutch of hits from the rest of the catalogue.
You’ll find fan-shot video of the Smiths cover up above (at the 1:02:20 mark) and down below, where you’ll likewise find the Sydney show’s setlist details (per setlist.fm).
Deftones’ current Australian tour has been pretty sweet for the fans so far — the band and Melbourne sandwich shop Hector’s Deli have teamed-up to deliver the “milk of the madonna” tres leches donut, a punfully-titled pastry available locally between May 4th-10th.
Deftones’ Down Under tour continues Wednesday (May 6th) at the Entertainment Centre in Brisbane. The rest of the show schedule is here.
