System of a Down’s enduring “Toxicity” single has been given a folky makeover from Canadian duo Fionn, who up until recently were not familiar with the iconic nu-metal outfit’s original anthem.
Vancouver, BC-based identical twins Alanna and Brianne Finn-Morris recently entered the Musora studio for the music education platform’s “Covers” challenge series, where artists hear a song for the first time and are asked to reimagine the song on the spot.
The sisters first suggested “Toxicity” had a Celtic vibe to it, before members of a backing band detailed SOAD’s Armenian-American roots. As they familiarized themselves with the original, they opted to break out their acoustics to give the song a folk-pop treatment inspired by both SOAD and their own Celtic heritage.
Ultimately, Alanna and Brianne went big with ethereal vocal harmonizing, which the rest of the band noted were “sufficiently haunted.”
