Mr. Bungle’s just-wrapped Latin American tour included off-and-on dates with Avenged Sevenfold, and had likewise found the oddball fusionists performing their California-era classic “Retrovertigo” onstage for the first time since the early Aughts. Last night (February 3rd), they put on an especially dizzying display in Buenos Aires, Argentina, when they brought out tourmate, A7X vocalist and mega-fan M. Shadows to help them croon through the cut.
Mid-way through Bungle’s opening set at the Movistar arena, Shadows came to the stage and started belting out “Retrovertigo” with the group. Since A7X covered the song as a bonus cut during their The Stage cycle, the collab seemed a given, and he and Bungle Mike Patton put on a vocal clinic.
You’ll find fan-shot footage from the performance up above and down below.
Back in 2019, Shadows explained that he wasn’t a fan of California when he heard it the first time, but Bungle’s 1999 full-length eventually seeped into his consciousness as a game-changing classic.
“‘Retrovertigo’ is one of their softer songs and a particular favorite of ours and we thought it’d be a fun twist to make a heavy version,” he’d explained of A7X’s cover. “We hope this song encourages the uninitiated to dig a little deeper into the brilliant world of Mr. Bungle. Mike Patton is one of the greatest vocalists of our generation and it was pretty daunting for me to sing one of his songs, but we had a great time recording this track.”
