L.A. neo-grungers Return to Dust are in the midst of a whirlwind of summer activity. They’re currently out on the road with Billy Corgan, they have a tour coming up with Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace, and they’ve just announced a new EP is on the way in August. Titled Speak Like the Dead, it’s being teased ahead of time by new single “Bored.”
“Bored” is the band’s second single of 2025, following April’s “Shine.” Guitarist-vocalist Matty Bielawski explained that the song — which sports somewhat of a granite-and-paisley psychedelic rock groove, high-soaring vocals, a funky bass breakdown and a bluesily ripping solo — was written between he and bassist Graham Stanush in Los Angeles during a private moment between tours.
“We started jamming in a secluded underpass behind a friend’s house; great acoustics but surrounded by needles and trash,” Bielawski said in a statement. “The song began as a meditation on boredom and apathy, but developed into an anthem about taking risks and grabbing life by the reins, inspired by some drastic life changes.”
Speak Like the Dead is the six-song follow-up to Return to Dust’s 2024 self-titled LP. The mini-release arrives August 1st via Republic Records, and can be pre-ordered on CD and “Iridescent Smoke”-tinted vinyl over here.
