Puscifer played their new album in-full over the summer at a pair of intimate concerts in Los Angeles, California. The rest of the world will now get to hear the experimental rock outfit’s latest batch of songs when Normal Isn’t officially gets released next year.
The theatrical act’s next LP — which follows 2020’s Existential Reckoning — is due out Februay 6th via Puscifer Entertainment/Alchemy Recordings/BMG. The album reportedly reflecting its members “early musical experiences” while simultaneously pushing Puscifer into “darker, more guitar-driven territory.”
“We’re definitely leaning into our early influences,” the project’s ringleader Maynard James Keenan explained in a statement, adding, “It’s the place where goth meets punk. It’s where I came from.”
“From the outset, we had discussed an element of rawness and edge, which guitar brings,” added multi-instrumentalist and Normal Isn’t co-producer Mat Mitchell. “We got rid of the guard rails and made the music more aggressive.”
To tease said goth-punk darkness, Puscifer have premiered a live video for the record’s biting lead single, “Self Evident,” which was recorded last August when Puscifer played back-to-back shows at L.A.’s Exchange venue. You can see the stomping, fuzz-forward performance up above.
Normal Isn’t was written and recorded across Arizona, Los Angeles, and on the road as the act were on last year’s Sessanta V2.0 tour.
The album finds the core trio of Keenan, Mitchell and vocalist Carina Round joined by regular contributors like bassist Greg Edwards (Failure), and drummers Gunnar Olsen and Sarah Jones (drums), while legendary bassist Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel) guests on the record’s “Normal Isn’t” and “Seven One,” Keenan’s TOOL-mate Danny Carey drums on “Seven One,” and Ian Ross — who happens to be the father of Nine Inch Nails’ Atticus Ross — adds narration to that latter track.
Normal Isn’t is available for pre-order in an array of collectible editions, including a Revolver-exclusive “pearl red” vinyl variant limited to 500 worldwide. You can order that now at Revolver’s shop.
