Following a handful of pre-release previews over the past few months, Poppy has officially dropped us into her Empty Hands era. Today (January 23rd) marks the release of the multi-hyphenate artist’s seventh full-length, and she’s marking the occasion with a video for its “Time Will Tell.”
The video for the record’s fourth single was directed by longtime visual collaborator Orie McGinness, with it being explained in a press release that it presents “a nightmarish backdrop, complete with anti-gravity floating clocks, body doubles, and time traveling portals.”
Poppy navigates those surrealistic conditions whilst singing and screaming her way through lines reflecting legacy, identity and illusion (“Time will tell / Pulling the veil of who you are”). Prior to “Time Will Tell,” Poppy had unveiled “Unravel,” “Bruised Sky” and “Guardian” to help promote Empty Hands, which found her once again working with former Bring Me the Horizon member Jordan Fish (with whom she’d collaborated on for 2024’s Negative Spaces).
For Revolver’s Winter Issue, Poppy described the potent, brutally honest relationship the pair have in the recording studio, and likewise discussed the creative highs of her new LP, how she’s not fixated on her screaming technique, toxic online comments, and how she never wants to make “wallpaper music.”
