Phil Campbell, the longtime guitarist of the mighty Motörhead, has died. He was 64.
The sad news was announced via a statement from Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons, the band also featuring his sons Todd, Dane and Tyla Campbell.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Philip Anthony Campbell, who passed away peacefully last night following a long and courageous battle in intensive care after a complex major operation.”
Campbell joined Motörhead in 1984. Alongside the band’s iconic frontman Lemmy Kilmister, the guitarist — who went by nicknames including “Wizzö,” “Zööm” and “Lörd Axsmith” — helped forge the thunderous sound that powered albums such as Orgasmatron, 1916 and Inferno. He would go on to play on 16 albums with the band, up to their final LP of all-new material, 2015’s Bad Magic.
Known not only for his musicianship but also for his humility and humor, Campbell earned deep respect from fans and fellow musicians alike. Even after Motörhead ended following Lemmy’s death in 2015, he continued performing with Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons, carrying forward the spirit of the music he loved. He also continued to spread the gospel of Motörhead far and wide, participating in events celebrating the band’s legacy.
