MELVINS and BUTTHOLE SURFERS members debut “weird” supergroup GATTA MORTA

Members of Melvins, Butthole Surfers, Big Business and more have banded together to form new heavy supergroup Gatta Morta, who announced their arrival this morning (August 4th) with a raucous debut single called “Black Hall.”

Gatta Mora features Melvins/ Fantômas guitarist-vocalist Buzz Osborne, Butthole Surfers bassist JD Pinkus, Melvins/Big Business drummer Coady Willis and guitarist Clinton Jacob, of Mr. Phylzzz.

The new band’s “Black Hall” is a sludge-lurching slow-rocker that certainly seems Melvins-coded, all things considered. At first blush, the band deliver loud-quiet-loud dynamics, creep-whispered verses and gang-sung choruses entailing some mystical happenings (“It’s a miracle”).  Willis describes the band’s approach as one that “wages asymmetrical psychedelic warfare in the name of romance.”

“It’s always a good time for the world to embrace a new heavy/weird band,” adds Osborne, explaining of their origins, “I had the idea for Gatta Morta while touring last fall. I realized I needed to start a band with these three. Seemed like a no brainer. Solidly weird rock music that needs to happen.”

“It’s been way too long since I got to write a heavy album from scratch with such high caliber players with such complimentary styles,” says Pinkus, “and we’re just cat scratching the surface of what we got goin’ on!”

While “Black Hall” arrived on streamers today via Ipecac Recordings, you can also order physical copies of Gatta Morta’s 4-song debut EP. A CD version is out now via iconic noise-rock imprint Amphetamine Reptile, and can be purchased here.

A vinyl edition is expected sometime in the future.
