Lou Koller — founding vocalist of Sick of It All and one of New York Hardcore’s strongest, most identifiable voices — has passed away following a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 59 years old.
News of Koller’s passing was confirmed by his bandmates today (July 24th) in an Instagram post.
“It’s with unbelievable sadness that we announce to our worldwide hardcore family the passing of our brother Lou Koller. The level of loss that we feel at this time is overwhelming,” they wrote.
“This year would have marked Sick of it All’s 40th anniversary as a band, and Lou’s camaraderie, commitment and enthusiasm were always steadfast throughout the years. We have lost a beloved friend and an iconic frontman. Lou had the power to raise everyone’s spirits at our shows with a smile and a sarcastic comment, and he won people over wherever we played, from every culture and every corner of the world.”
Koller had first announced he’d received an esophageal cancer diagnosis in the summer of 2024, which led the act to cancel a European tour so their vocalist could undergo treatment. The community rallied behind Koller, raising funds for the hardcore musician at a benefit concert later that year.
By May of 2025, the vocalist had revealed that he’d undergone a final round of chemo treatment and was pronounced cancer free. Sadly, a few months later he revealed that the cancer had returned.
“At this time of intense grief, we must again acknowledge the great help and support offered by everyone who donated to Lou’s medical fund,” the band added. “You all helped Lou feel very special and very loved as he battled away these last two years. His battle is over now and he can finally rest. Hopefully he can somehow still see and feel the beautiful, positive mark he left on the world.”
Koller was born and raised in Queens, and began Sick of It All with brother and guitarist Pete Koller in 1986. The band would release a 7-inch via Revelation Records in 1987, and many of those songs were later re-recorded for the band’s 1989 full-length debut, Blood, Sweat and No Tears.
Koller would go on to deliver super scratchy, often intimidating, sometimes melodic, and always fiercely-delivered vocals across landmark releases like Just Look Around and their major label debut, 1994’s Scratch the Surface. All told, he made 12 full-length albums with SOIA, the last of which being 2018’s Wake the Sleeping Dragon!
His stamp on hardcore and heavy music ran well beyond this, his identifiable roar popping through gang vocal sections and guest spots with the likes of Gorilla Biscuits, Civ, Ensign, the Haunted and more. He also delivered vocals for industrial supergroup Blood from the Soul’s 1993 debut, To Spite the Gland That Breeds.
Sick of It All’s years of touring connected them deeply to a number of bands in the hardcore, punk and metal scenes. Beneath SOIA’s tributary post to their fallen brother and bandmate, condolences were made by members of Knocked Loose, Anthrax, Voodoo Glow Skulls, the Ramones, Harms Way, American Nightmare, Thursday, Fishbone, Strife and countless more.
