L7 bassist Jennifer Finch died on Saturday (July 18th), less than a week after revealing she had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. She was 59.
“With a very heavy heart we announce that our beloved bandmate, friend, and fellow troublemaker Jennifer Finch has passed away today,” the surviving band members wrote on Instagram. “She had a long courageous fight with brain cancer and was loved by many wonderful friends, musical peers and fans worldwide. We love you Jennifer.”
Speaking of Finch’s musical peers, many of them had rallied behind the bass player after the news of her illness broke, with TOOL’s Maynard James Keenan, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament, Bikini Kill’s Kathleen Hanna and others donating to a GoFundMe campaign, which raised nearly $400,000 to help cover her medical costs.
Before joining L7 in 1986, Finch played bass in the short-lived San Francisco band Sugar Babydoll (or Sugar Babylon) alongside Courtney Love and Kat Bjelland, who would go on to found Hole and Babes in Toyland, respectively. She appeared on L7’s classic first four albums, 1988’s self-titled debut, 1990’s Smell the Magic, 1992’s Bricks Are Heavy and 1994’s Hungry for Stink, as well as the group’s 2019 comeback LP, Scatter the Rats.
