Drummer Jay Weinberg has announced he’s splitting from crossover icons Suicidal Tendencies to focus on “other “passion projects,” including his forthcoming, to-be-detailed singles series.
Weinberg, who had previously performed with Slipknot, announced his departure over the weekend in a collaborative Instagram post with Suicidal Tendencies, where he thanked the group for “bringing me onboard for an incredible year and a half of shows!”
He explained that he’s bowed out because his plate is pretty full at the moment, in particular because of the upcoming birth of his first child. He also referenced the recent revealing of his Portraits of an Apparition with noise artist Argus, his developing collaborative singles series and “some new in-the-works projects that I can’t quite announce just yet.”
“Though I won’t be jamming with the fellas, I can’t possibly overstate the love and respect I have for them, the Suicidal Army and extended family, and all the cyco fans I’ve met across six continents playing shows with one of my favorite bands,” he wrote.
Weinberg officially joined Sucidal Tendencies in 2024, shortly after the drummer had been let go from Slipknot in 2023, a decision that had left him “heartbroken and blindsided.” His latest post thanked the members of Suicidal for offering friendship and opportunity during a challenging time.”
“You guys picked up a friend when he was down, and gave him the opportunity to truly feel the message of ‘You Can’t Bring Me Down’ at a time when he needed it the most. I can’t thank you enough for that, and I can’t wait to see what you all do next.
He added: “I quite literally can’t conceive of my life as a drummer without the profound influence of Suicidal Tendencies. So many of my drumming heroes have added to the historic legacy of this band, and it’s the honor of a lifetime to contribute to it myself in some way…thank you guys so much for everything!”
During his tenure with Suicidal Tendencies, Weinberg performed on a re-recorded version of their Freedumb anthem “We Are Family,” as well as the punk, funk and thrash-jolted “Adrenaline Addict.” His many shows with the band included a massive run of dates on Metallica’s M72 tour.
Last November, Weinberg forged his own path through the launching of his debut solo single, “Sandstone.” The metal song featured vocals from Deafheaven’s George Clarke, and teases a forthcoming singles series that will reportedly feature a rotating cast of guest vocalists.
