James Lollar, the founding multi-instrumentalist and producer behind synthwave project GosT, has died at the age of 46, his management team has confirmed.
Lollar’s management team at Bad Behaviour confirmed the musician’s surprise passing today (April 2nd).
“The whole GOST team is incredibly saddened to inform you that James Cody Lollar, known as GOST, passed away yesterday,” they wrote. “We are sending all our prayers to his family and friends during this time of grief. He will be remembered as a wonderful human being and a tremendously talented artist.
“We kindly ask that everyone respect the privacy of his loved ones during these difficult times. He will be deeply missed by all.”
GosT debuted in 2013 with the Nocturnal Shift EP, and would weave together a compellingly metallic darkwave aesthetic in the years to come, last supplying chilled synths, dancefloor rhythms and black-metal screeches on 2024’s Prophecy LP, which was GosT’s first through Metal Blade Records.
Fellow Texans Frozen Soul are among those who have paid tribute to Lollar since his passing, the band reflecting on their friendship and his synth contributions to their 2023 LP, Glacial Domination.
“We became friends with him years ago through the punk and hardcore scenes in Texas. When he started GosT everyone was so blown away and proud to see him do some killer electronic music.
“When Frozen Soul was recording Glacial Domination we wanted some cool intros/outros for the album and we knew who to call. We were not just friends of GosT but also fans so we hit him up. He did something for almost every song on the album and we were blown away by what he came up with. We still can’t thank him enough for his contribution to that album and it definitely wouldn’t be the same record without him.”
