While we may still be a few weeks off from the release of Volbeat’s G.O.A.T.’ed new album, God of Angel’s Trust, the veteran rockers have offered up some audio salve in the form of the record’s third single, “Time Will Heal.”
Coming off the rock-hard chunking of “By a Monster’s Hand” and the occult reverie of “In the Barn of the Goat Giving Birth to Satan’s Spawn in a Dying World of Doom,” the new single takes a more relaxed, yet still distortion-blaring approach. It’s a heart-tugging anthem sitting somewhere between Volbeat’s tender side and the yearning, glitzy arena rock of a Killers hit.
A press release has singer-guitarist Michael Poulsen admitting that the song — an “intensely personal track” — was partially inspired by the loss of his father, along with the see-sawing nature of grief. Sometimes he’s doing well, other times he’s “falling into these black holes where everything is empty and nothing is fair.”
“Through life, we go through these ups and downs, and sometimes, it’s like turning on a switch and it can change from one minute to another,” he said. “We suddenly get in a sad, emotional mood where there just doesn’t seem to be a way to see the light or good in anything. But we always find a way to make things good again. I’m good at turning those moments around quickly, but that comes with accepting the good with the bad and using the bad moments to grow and learn instead of letting them bother you more that it should and having your mind manipulate reality.
“The important thing is to realize that while nothing can be good forever, do not let the dark side of life take over. Have the confidence to know there will be better days ahead when we’re dealing with these moments or demons and we’re struggling to find anything good in what we’re doing.”
Along with the heavy, yet inspirational theme, “Time Will Heal” arrives with a video full of Volbeat performance footage, bloody surrealist allegory and, yes, even more goat imagery. The clip, which you can see up above, was directed by Julia Patey.
As previously reported, Volbeat’s next album is out June 6th, and pre-orders on exclusive oxblood-colored vinyl, limited to 1,000, are available now in Revolver’s shop.
