While Underoath have been spending the bulk of their fall celebrating their classic They’re Only Chasing Safety album on a 20th anniversary tour, the post-hardcore veterans have likewise been peppering 2024 with a series of new songs. Next up from the Florida-bred outfit is an especially hard-hitting loosie titled “Generation No Surrender.”
Underoath seem to be getting progressively heavier with each single this year — to that end, “Generation No Surrender” blasts out the barracks with D-beated fury and Spencer Chamberlain’s especially aggressive screaming voice. Thematically, the vocalist taps into a confounded existential malaise, asking, “What the fuck do we do here” as we collectively watch the world burn.
The track also features some momentarily electro-skittered breakdowns, but on the whole it’s an ass-beater of epic proportions. You can hear for yourself up above.
“We wanted to write a song that would be a ripper live — something that moves an entire room, something we can all get behind and relate to,” Chamberlain explained in a statement.
He added of its central theme: “This song is written from the perspective that, if ‘they’ told us the world was ending and the apocalypse was upon us, we wouldn’t be surprised — nor would we run from it. I think we’d face that battle head-on. I feel like we’ve reached a point in our lives where nothing surprises us anymore. We’ve all seen and been through a lot of shit, and I fear we’re never told the truth. That pisses me off. I’m sure it pisses all of us off, which is why I feel like we are all ‘Generation No Surrender.’ It’s not just about age — it’s about all of us.”
Though the details on a forthcoming album release have yet to be delivered in full, “Generation No Surrender” arrives in the lead up towards Underoath’s next full-length, which is expected to arrive sometime in 2025 via MNRK Heavy.
