Thursday are in a commemoratively nostalgic, but forward-thinking mood. That’s because the New Jersey greats have unveiled their much anticipated second single of 2024, titled “White Bikes,” while simultaneously celebrating their collective post-hardcore history.
“Twenty-five years to the day that we unveiled our first ever song, we are sharing our newest one,” the band wrote on Instagram ahead of officially dropping “White Bikes.” “This is our gift to you this holiday season. We hope you love it as much as we do.”
“White Bikes,” which you can hear up above, follows the band’s “Application for Release From the Dream,” which was their first piece of new music in 13 years. This newer track, meanwhile, was recorded at Berlin, Germany’s Hansa Studio, famously the spot where icons including David Bowie, Iggy pop, Nick Cave and Depeche Mode made records over the years.
“There are still magical places left in this world and Hansa is one of them,” Thursday added in their post.
This newest track of theirs began as an idea from the group’s semi-recently instated guitarist Norman Branon (Texas Is the Reason, New End Original), which is why the rest of Thursday say “White Bikes” possesses his signature feel. Touring bassist Stu Richardson, however, also suggested the group arrange the song as a “a nostalgic, upbeat, summertime version of’ Thursday’s “War All the Time.”
“Geoff [Rickly, vocalist] told us that the lyrics deal with the loss of a dear friend — one of the first people he ever played music with — who disappeared one day on his bike,” the band stated, adding of their most recent release, “This one means a lot to us for a lot of different reasons. We have no record label, we have no ‘team’ behind this. But we have each and every one of you and that is all we’ve ever really needed in these 25 years.”
