While Underoath are about to mount their celebratory They’re Only Chasing Safety 20th anniversary tour, vocalist Spencer Chamberlain also told Revolver earlier this year that the band are “dying to get to the next chapter.” With that in mind, the post-hardcore veterans have just unveiled a daring and even danceable new track titled “Teeth.”
The tune starts up with wavy, hypnagogic strings-and-electric-piano samples and a twitchy jungle beat, pushing the band towards a jazz-tronica hybridity. Though Chamberlain mouths out a light and melodic intro, the band ultimately launch into a groove-bombed metallic backend full of production-fuzzy growls.
“With our new track ‘Teeth,’ we dove into a pretty exciting territory for me — something I’ve always wanted to explore with this band but never felt was possible,” Chamberlain said in a statement. “It almost has a vibe reminiscent of classic hip-hop samples or something that Linkin Park might have done, which I find so cool. I never imagined we’d actually pull it off in an Underoath song, but it came together so naturally.
He adds of the lyrics: “The song puts you in a scenario of predator and prey, and in this case, I’m the prey. I’m challenging the other person to confront their cannibalistic nature, explaining to me what it feels like to tear through my life as I bleed out in front of them.”
“Teeth” is Underoath’s first new song of 2024, and follows last year’s “Let Go” and “Lifeline (Drowning)” singles.
As previously reported, the band are set to hit the road later this month to celebrate 2004 breakout They’re Only Chasing Safety, with the tour finding the band playing the album front-to-back, as well as an additional set of songs voted by fans from each city.
