We’ve known for some time that Sun Dont Shine — the heavy supergroup comprising members of Crowbar, Down and Type O Negative — were getting ready to deliver a full-length release called Birth to Death. Today (February 18th), the band have formally fit the record with a spring release date, and have done so while also unveiling a heavy, mortality-contemplating crusher called “Power to Live.”
A press release explains that guitarist-vocalist Kenny Hickey (Type O Negative, Silvertomb) and guitarist Kirk Windstein (Crowbar, Down) crafted the cut together based upon the single artwork from visual artist Nadiya Vizier, an illustration of a group of soldiers — seemingly both dead and alive — piled beneath a cross. Hickey remarked “how shameful it is that, as human beings, we still haven’t evolved beyond killing one another,” which became the crux of the tune.
“The track is a challenge to the times we’re living in,” Sun Dont Shine explain in a joint statement, adding that it is “an insistence on survival and consciousness in the face of cycles that refuse to break.”
They face the challenge with slow-sludged grooves, percussive beatdowns and rasp-forward vocal harmonizing about a world brought to its knees by those with the “power to kill”. You can hear the track via the player above, while a music video will be unleashed on February 23rd.
Birth to Death will be out in full on April 1st via Corpse Paint Records. The tracklisting has yet to be revealed in full, but Sun Dont Shine preceded today’s album tease release with 2025 singles “In the End” and “Coming Down.”
