It’s the dawn of 2025, and many of us are in a reflective mood. While some of you are probably taking stock of your lives right now, post-hardcore greats Thursday are apparently “Taking Inventory of a Frozen Lake” — for that’s the name of the third song of their current reunion phase.
The new tune follows the band’s 2024 singles “Application for Release From the Dream” and “White Bikes,” and per the band’s New Year’s Day announcement over on Instagram, this latest piece “began life at Steve Evetts’s studio in Jersey on off days when we toured with MCR in 2022.”
Thursday added: “The lyrics refer to the dark night of the soul that people encounter when they are forced to examine their pasts. It reminds us of an updated version of the kind of songs we gravitated towards in the Full Collapse era and we are so blessed and so happy to share it with you.”
Sonically, you do get some vintage Thursday vibes on “Taking Inventory of a Frozen Lake,” with the band launching into a heart-tuggingly emo, but heftily-arranged fracas of heavy beats, yearning vocals and sad-chugged guitar work.
Narratively, vocalist Geoff Rickly gets hella reflective, despite not being able to see himself in the mirror. “Just kept focusing on the sound of my voice,” he sings, perhaps, in relation to that absence.
