Good news for you heavy-hungry old-school Devil Wears Prada fans: the veteran metalcore-expanders are all set to “Play the Old Shit.” That is, the group have formally brought the vinyl bonus track from last year’s Flowers LP into the digital realm.
If you hadn’t had a chance to cop the vinyl when the record came out in November, the song is now available on streaming services and via the visualizer up above.
It begins with a catty lil’ skit where a fan chastises the genre-hopping flow of modern-day TDWP, and then the band deliver the heavy through face-concaving chugs, intestines-rending breaks and meta-textually weaponized screams about, perhaps, their life in the scene (“Been caught inside a fever dream/For over 20 years/It’s a part of me/Yeah, I grew up here”).
“Never have we played around with any kind of secret song, so it was really fun rolling out ‘Play the Old Shit’ vinyl-only,” vocalist Mike Hranica explained. “With that said, we’ve always known we’d release the song digitally, as well.”
He adds of the arrangement: “The song is super straightforward, and within the context of the album, it provides a totally different ending in terms of mood. We are all very excited for listeners to check it out.”
As previously reported, TDWP will be spreading their flowers throughout the spring on a North American run with openers Four Year Strong, Split Chain and I Promised the World.
That trip begins March 13th at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma’s Diamond Ballroom, and concludes April 12th at the Brooklyn Bowl in Nashville, Tennessee. You’ll find the rest of the date and venue details here.
