Hear SPLIT CHAIN cover TYPE O NEGATIVE’s “I Don’t Wanna Be Me”

While rising U.K. outfit Split Chain have been leaning into a series of doomgaze grooves over the past year, the band have now opted to pick up the pace for their newest single: a cover of Type O Negative’s punky “I Don’t Wanna Be Me.”

The cover follows Split Chain’s recent “(Re)-Extract” single, which took on more of a Deftones feel. But a press release explains that the members of Split Chain are all serious Type O fans, too, with the New York gloom crew’s music constantly in rotation on the younger act’s van stereo. Covering the Life Is Killing Me classic allowed the band to explore outside of their usual sludgy tendencies

They admitted as much in a joint statement: “It is a bit of a different vibe for us, more punky and fast, but we feel it encapsulates our fun side.”

While somewhat incongruous to the depressive nature of Peter Steele’s OG lyrics, Split Chain are showcasing their own joie de vivre with a lo-fi vid showcasing energized live performances and backstage dance parties. You can see it for yourself up above.

As previously reported, Split Chain recently started working with Epitaph Records. Despite issuing a series of independent and now label-backed singles, Split Chain have yet to announce a formal full-length release.

The band did, however, recently reveal that they’ll be supporting Canadian post-hardcore band Silverstein on a North American tour in 2025. That run of dates will also feature sets from emo-hardcore vets Thursday, and an as-yet unannounced fourth act.
