One month out from the release of Scowl’s Are We All Angels, the Santa Cruz, California, quintet have offered up another hooks-heavy preview of their upcoming LP. This time around, they’re flipping us off with an animated music video for its “Tonight (I’m Afraid).”
The bulk of the song plays closer to the pop side of Scowl’s sound, with “Tonight (I’m Afraid)” initially holding itself together through infectiously herky-jerky bass-and-drum syncopation, as well as a melody-gliding vocal turn from singer Kat Moss. That said, the song eventually rumbles towards a vintage tom-cresting breakdown beat, fire-powered guitar chords and a heavier set of screams from Moss.
The flipbook animation-style music video was put together by Adult Swim’s Adam Fuchs, and it finds cartoony avatars of Scowl boppin around to their song, at least until a shadowy beast starts decapitating the hardcore crew. It likewise caps with an album-title-alluding ascension to a higher plane. You can see for yourself up above.
As previously reported, Scowl’s Are We All Angels arrives April 4th via their new label home, Dead Oceans. The record was produced by Will Yip (Turnstile, Title Fight, Mannequin Pussy), who had previously worked with the group on their 2023’s Psychic Dance Routine EP.
Described as an album “marked by alienation, grief and the loss of control,” Are We All Angels has previously been teased by the singles “B.A.B.E.,” “Not Hell, Not Heaven” and “Special.”
