Poppy is back with her second solo single of 2024, and it’s positively brutalizing. The genre-contorting artist is leaning into her heavier tendencies with “they’re all around us,” a metalcore-tinged piece seemingly about keeping a keen eye on the untrusty ones in our midst.
It all kicks off with Poppy’s savagely-screamed, “Coward!” From there, the song kabooms into gun-turret djenting and double-kick-drum mania, with a frenzied verse leaving Poppy questioning her surroundings. The chorus takes on a more melodic front, tunefully contemplating what to do when your spirit is left “black and blue.”
A visualizer for the track finds a tiny Poppy primal-screaming while cavorting with a murder of crows. Later, a giant-sized version of the performer gets tied down by her Lilliputian doppelganger, Gulliver’s Travels-style. You can see for yourself up above.
The song is the second Poppy track this year to find the artist collaborating with former Bring Me the Horizon member Jordan Fish, who co-produced the song. Previously, they’d delivered the “New Way Out” single together.
In addition to Fish’s contribution, former Fever 333/current House of Protection guitarist Stephen Harrison co-wrote “they’re all around us.”
