Orbit Culture are taking themselves down a dark and doomy path as they progress towards the release of their fifth full-length, Death Above Life. Having just heard the Swedish force’s latest single, which also happens to be the album’s title track, we’re gladly following right behind them.
The newest Orbit Culture single follows last month’s “Tales of War,” but it’s also the first track to arrive since the group formally announced Death Above Life. Guitarist-vocalist Niklas Karlsson described the LP as “a new beginning” for the band, with it being noted in a group statement that this latest single is also “darker, heavier, and leans into a more horror-driven side of Orbit Culture.”
Sonically, the group death-march into a lean but oppressive groove, which is complemented by terror-stricken trilling. There’s an ominous, ambiance-driven break in the middle, but then the group go out heavy with some backend doom.
“Lyrically, it reflects a choice,” the band added jointly. “When faced with the idea of continuing down a path surrounded by the wrong people, we sometimes know that we have to cut ties.
“It is not literally about choosing death but walking away from what is holding us back. ‘Death Above Life’ is about letting go of what no longer fits to make space for something real.”
A music video for the song can be seen up above, while Orbit Culture confirmed that the song “will see the light of day for the very first time” when they play the Download Festival on June 25th. You’ll find all of their upcoming European dates over here.
