Mushroomhead’s calling — do you accept the charges?
The long-running masked metal collective have slipped their face-coverings back on to announce a ninth full-length release is coming our way this summer. Titled Call the Devil, the Cleveland outfit’s next record is due out August 9th, but they’re dialing into the nu-metal damage a little early via new single “Fall in Line.”
The song marks the return of guitarist Dave “Gravy” Felton, who left the project in 2012 and hadn’t appeared on-record with the band as a full-time member since 2010’s Beautiful Stories for Ugly Children. The aggressively chunked verses have vocalist Scott Beck screaming about being the thing nightmares are made out of, while clean singer Jackie LaPonza croons out a chorus about ultimate sorrow.
The music video, which you can see up above, is the formal debut of Mushroomhead’s new masks, which were produced and designed between Dead Neck Studios monster maker by Jordan Patton and Mushroomhead guitarist Joe Gall. As you’ll see, they’re also handling some super spiky, skull-adorned rotary phones.
“One of my favorite things about the ‘Fall in Line’ video is the use of the color red,” percussionist Steve “Skinny” Felton said in a statement. “It’s a powerful and emotional color palette. ‘Fall in Line’ was actually the last song we recorded for the LP. It came together really fast. Upbeat, aggressive and fun.”
As for the rest of the record, Call the Devil marks the first full-length from the band since 2020’s A Wonderful Life, and it’ll apparently mix a “surprisingly jazzy anthem” (“Emptiness”) into the album’s heavier moments.
Skinny added of the album title: “We played around with a few different album titles, and apparently Shout at the Devil was already taken… so we figured we’d just try calling.”
