Is the air getting slippery in here, or is it just us? Reason might be that Primus and Maynard James Keenan just released a breathtaking studio version of their new “Little Lord Fentanyl” collaboration. And it is wild.
The song, which likewise marks the first Primus recording with new drummer John Hoffman, begins with a familiarly off-kilter and spidery bass line from Les Claypool. Hoffman quickly locks everything into a jazzmodic freakiness.
Claypool’s croaky vocal hints at the Little Lord wandering the streets while swallowing treats, while Keenan seems to be supplying the more texturally emotive, supportive backups. “Tom Sawyer”-esque synth bursts abound, while Larry “Ler” LaLonde delivers a skronky lil’ chestnut of a guitar solo.

As previously reported, Primus and Keenan premiered the song last month when the group launched their “Sessanta V2.0” tour with A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. That trip is ongoing, and it hits Rogers, Arkansas’ Walmart AMP tonight (May 2nd). You’ll find the rest of the dates here.
Primus likewise have their “Onward & Upward” headlining summer tour creepin’ up. The trek, which features Ty Segall and MonoNeon on select dates, begins July 5th at Paso Robles, California’s Vina Robles Amphitheatre.
