I Prevail have already wrecked us plenty with a trio of heavy-set singles from their forthcoming Violent Nature album. Now, the band are looking to inflict some of that damage onto themselves via the latest album preview, the tellingly-titled “Annihilate Me.”
The song starts subtly enough, with shadow-crested and effects-cloaked guitars softly plucking beneath a somber vocal treatment. As it heads from the low-rolling intro towards a skull-stomping bridge, the lyrics present the tale of a vulnerable royal being nailed to their throne by unknown forces, and the figure is about to face a world of pain (“I’m the king of suffering”).
“‘Annihilate Me’ feels like one of the most I Prevail songs on the album,” vocalist Eric Vanlerberghe commented. “It’s about opening yourself up over and over again only to keep getting cut down, but regardless of how many times you’ve been pushed down you’re going to push yourself further — even if that means your own annihilation.”
“Annihilate Me” follows the singles “Rain,” “Into Hell” and “Violent Nature.” As previously reported, the band’s next album is the first to be released since the departure of clean vocalist Brian Burkheiser earlier in the year. As such, it’s also the first to find guitarist Dylan Bowman embracing a clean-sung co-vocalist role alongside Vanlerberghe.
Violent Nature is due September 19th via Fearless Records. An exclusive vinyl variant on blood-shot-colored vinyl, limited to 500 copies, is currently up for pre-order in Revolver’s shop.
