After serving up their Tragedy of the Commons album of originals at the top of 2025, long-running metalcore crew Great American Ghost have now unleashed a haunting new version of Deftones’ classically grooving “Hole in the Earth.”
The cover had been hinted at through GAG’s socials earlier in the month via a quick, feedback-spiraling teaser vid that included the caption “i hate all of my friends.” This led fans to wonder whether this would be a new cut or a cover of Saturday Night Wrist’s opening number. In a way, you could argue it’s both!
GAG give “Hole in the Earth” an earnest, distortion-blaring performance. The Deftones tribute finds vocalist Ethan Harrison leaning into a supremely Chino Moreno-styled croon, the singer likewise contemplating evil, tasteless friends and more. And you know what? We don’t hate it.
“‘Hole in the Earth’ was our first and only choice when we decided to tackle a Deftones song,” Harrison explains in a statement. “Not only is it our collective favorite by one of our biggest influences, but the subject matter really resonated with us at the time of recording. I’d encourage anyone listening to explore the story behind the song — and know that GAG was in a very similar place when we tracked this. We’re really proud of how it turned out.”

As for Deftones, their much-anticipated private music is out August 22nd via Reprise/Warner Music, and can currently be pre-ordered on limited-edition clear vinyl, as well as on CD and cassette, in Revolver’s shop.
Deftones begin a North American headline tour at Vancouver, BC’s Rogers Arena on August 22nd. They also have a pair of shows with System Of A Down coming up in Toronto, Ontario, and recently announced the details of their next Dia De Los Deftones festival.
