Texas death-metal masters Frozen Soul are crushing their foes with a new, furious protest anthem called “Absolute Zero.”
Described in press materials as a “53-second stance against authoritarianism,” the song marks the “cold school” death-metal band’s first piece of original music release since 2023’s Glacial Domination album. It’s unclear when they wrote “Absolute Zero,” exactly, but vocalist Chad Green notes that the fast-blasting ripper has taken on new meaning in light of the violent and deadly clashes between U.S. citizens and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (a.k.a ICE).
“More relevant than the day written – with all of the chaos happening in our country, with ICE killing and ripping apart families, ‘Absolute Zero’ comes as our stance against authoritarianism and the monsters that are enforcing it,” Green confirms.
A music video begins with a Blockbuster-retro aesthetic, as a metal fan loads up a VHS cassette containing Frozen Soul’s single. The band warp into blast-manic grotesquerie and a micro groove, Green delivers dire warnings to his enemies (“Ground to nothing / Concealed in snow / Reduced to Absolute zero”), and then the singer smashes a symbolic block of ice with the group’s righteous new tool.
“I went and got the biggest sledgehammer I could find, and Sam [Mobley, bass] carved ‘icebreaker’ into it. We wrote a little message to the world on it—then I froze a skull I painted in my freezer, put it on a cinder block, and obliterated it. The best ice is crushed ice.”
Frozen Soul begin a European tour next week, but return to U.S. soil in April for a trek with Avatar and Fleshgod Apocalypse. The overseas show info can be found here, while the North American dates are down below.
