While the weather’s god damn gorgeous out there, the fact that we’re already halfway through summer is kind of giving us the blues. The good news is that Frayle is feeling the pain, too, and the Ohio-made doom-metal act are coping by transmitting a distortion-glazed cover of Lana Del Rey’s iconic gloom-pop anthem, “Summertime Sadness.”
The new cover hit streamers today (August 5th) and plays reasonably faithful to the version found on Del Rey’s 2012 sophomore full-length, Born to Die. That said, Frayle’s intro swaps sad-souled synth tones for chorus effect-watery, Type O-weary guitar work. Gwyn Strang gets breathier with the Vitamin D-depleted source material.
The biggest difference may well be in the music video, where we see Strang generally making her way around an open meadow in a crimson dress quite unlike the all-black number Del Rey reported she was wearing in the original “Summertime Sadness” — though to be fair, there are a couple costume changes, and Strang also pairs what looks like a dark, crow-feathered gown with a wicked crown of thorns.

Of course, Frayle have a long history of remodeling songs in their heavy image, including past covers of Soundgarden and Bauhaus. They also issued original single “Walking Wounded” earlier in the summer.
