AFI have announced their 12th album, Silver Bleeds the Black Sun… and unveiled its lead single, the lavishly lugubrious “Behind the Clock.”
The song finds a mustachioed Davey Havok and Co. kicking off a new chapter by diving headlong into the Vantablack of a vintage goth sound. Think the Cure, Peter Murphy and Sisters of Mercy. “Behind the Clock” opens with eerie ambiance and a rumbling bass line before Havok comes in with a vampiric croon that suggests Bela Lugosi might not be so dead after all.
The single arrived along with a moody music video directed by Gilbert Trejo, who commented: “We wanted the video to feel like you’re seeing something you shouldn’t. In effect you are, because that’s how Davey writes lyrics. He’s expressing himself so openly, that you’re let behind this curtain. It’s a world that most artists don’t cut to, marrow deep.”
