Rising nu-gazers Fleshwater take a trip to the mall in the new, eerily liminal-spaced music video for their latest 2000: In Search of the Endless Sky single, “Last Escape.”
The record’s second single finds vocalist Marisa Shirar earnestly and melodically posing the question “Is there somewhere else you’d rather be but home?” at the tail end of the first verse, above a thick-but-bouncy post-hardcore beat.
For the purposes of the new video, which was directed by Eric Richter, it looks like Fleshwater themselves are prone to posting up in reasonably abandoned shopping centers — it was shot at Bradley, Illinois’ Northfield Square Mall, a building that has lost numerous anchor retailers over the years, and whose future is ultimatelt tied to a proposal to build a waterpark.
Until then, we’re faced with a flood of effects-chimed guitar tones as the band bash out their tune near the food court, in a light-gleamin’ atrium and within various oddly scenic, gated-up mall locales. The band also shot their recent promo pictures at the mall.
“Last Escape” follows recent Revolver-favorited single “Jetpack.” Both tracks will appear on 2000: In Search of the Endless Sky, the band’s follow-up to 2022 debut album We’re Not Here to Be Loved. The new album was recorded in multiple locales — the vocals were self-recorded, while guitars and bass were tracked at God City Studio with Kurt Ballou and Zach Weeks, and drums were laid down at Mag Pie Recording Studio with Kevin Bernstein.
