On the surface, it doesn’t seem like Five Finger Death Punch and Taylor Swift would have much in common with each other, yet a new best-of project from the Vegas metal heavies found the act re-recording some their greatest hits to reclaim their song royalites, Taylor’s Version-style.
5FDP’s newly announced and forthcoming 20 Years of Five Finger Death Punch – Best of Volume 1 features recently re-recorded versions of several chart-topping songs. While this was done to celebrate their history, on a more practical level the band revealed that they’d also done this after finding out that their former label recently sold off their original master recordings without their knowledge — or the opportunity to buy the songs back for themselves.
“We would have loved to have a shot at reclaiming our masters, or at least to be involved in the transaction but we found out after the fact,” guitarist Zoltan Bathory said in a statement, adding that the group were both “surprised, but not surprised.”
He continued: “These kinds of behind closed-doors deals have become far too common in the music industry. Labels buy, sell or trade artist’s work without their knowledge or consent, reducing them to soulless commodities.
“But life is a chess game so when this happened to Taylor Swift, she responded by re-recording her catalog. After that respectably bold move, her fans switched to streaming the new version out of protest and loyalty. We have one of the most hardcore and loyal fan bases on the planet so I know our fans will do the same.”
The upcoming Best of features 14 redone versions of big-time 5FDP anthems like “The Bleeding” “Bad Company” and “Wrong Side of Heaven.” It also features a trio of live tracks.
The first preview from the set is the re-recorded version of their anthemic “I Refuse,” from 2018’s And Justice For None. This time around, vocalist Ivan Moody is backed up by In This Moment singer Maria Brink. You’ll find a lyric video for the spirited redux up above.
20 Years of Five Finger Death Punch – Best of Volume 1 is due out July 18th via Better Noise Music. An pre-order for the collection on exclusive “brown swirl” vinyl, limited to 250 copies, is up now in Revolver’s shop.
