Wake up, babe, new Dream Theater just dropped.
The prog-metal legends are upping the ante of their ongoing 40th anniversary celebrations with news that a full-length called Parasomnia is on the way for 2025. They’re also teasing the release right now through the arrival of new nocturnal rocker “Night Terror.”
“Night Terror” marks the first bit of new music from the classic Dream Theater lineup of vocalist James LaBrie, guitarist John Petrucci, bassist John Myung, keyboardist Jordan Rudess and drummer Mike Portnoy since 2009’s Black Clouds & Silver Linings. Portnoy officially linked back up with his longtime bandmates in 2023.
The song is an on-point fever dream of Petruccian guitar wizardry, dramatically note-warped keyboard solos, prog-powerful drum pivots and LaBrie’s powerfully R.E.M.-disturbing vocal performance. You can check out the towering new Dream Theater tune via the music video up above.
It’s explained in a press statement that much of the band’s 16th album is similarly themed around late-night disturbances — including “sleepwalking, sleep paralysis and night terrors” — with songs including “A Broken Man,” “Dead Asleep,” “Midnight Messiah” and “Bend the Clock” also reflecting the Parasomnia of the album title.
In their waking hours, the band cut the record with engineer James ‘Jimmy T’ Meslin, while Petrucci handled production duties. Parasomnia was mixed by Andy Sneap. The album arrives in full February 7th via Inside Out Music/Sony Music.
As previously reported, Dream Theater are currently undertaking global dates to celebrate their 40 years of prog-rockin’. The band have European tour dates spread between October and November, while they hit South America by the end of the year, and take on a North American leg of dates in 2025.
