DevilDriver are back, can you dig it?
Dez Fafara and his long-running, groove-focused metal faction have announced that an upcoming LP dubbed Strike and Kill is on the way later this year, though they’re plugging the release ahead of time with a lethal beater called “Dig Your Own Grave.”
The track is full of heavy artillery double-kick work and battering riffage, but brings an eerie shimmer to the darkened, melodic chorus. Fafara brings his signature rasp to the tune with lines about actions and consequences.
“‘Dig Your Own Grave’ is about how one wrong decision, one wrong move can see your whole world turned upside down, effectively ‘digging’ your own grave… it’s that simple,” Fafara explained in a statement.
He adds: “It can also refer to how your decisions can fuck someone else. This is why there’s the line ‘six feet ain’t deep enough for you’, because only a deep, deep hole is fitting for what you’ve done or tried to do to others. Be careful when you choose to make decisions at midnight.”
A video for the track presents performance-style footage with the grave results of a motorcycle gang’s high-stakes poker game.
DevilDriver’s Strike and Kill follows 2023’s Dealing with the Demons Vol. II. The album marks the return of founding bass legend Jon Miller, and unites he and Fafara with guitarists Alex Lee and Gabe Mangold and drummer Davier Ortega Perez.
The album is out July 10 via Napalm Records and can be pre-ordered and pre-saved here.
