As previously reported, hardcore lifers and current Revolver cover stars Converge are exploring “the turmoil of living” on their mega-anticipated next album, Love Is Not Enough. With the LP’s newly released second preview, “We Were Never the Same,” they’re framing this through the experience of grief and mourning.
The song, which follows first single “Love Is Not Enough” and acts as the album’s closing cut, begins with a dark, propulsive rumble of percussion from drummer Ben Koller, and soon ushers in thick and meaty bass fuzz from Nate Newton, sinewy guitar pull-offs and hammered-down chord work from Kurt Ballou and the heart-rending howls of Jacob Bannon, who noted in a press release that the song has grim yet illuminating origins,
“I wrote these words in the parking lot of a funeral home while reflecting on loss,” he says. “Why do we gather to mourn but not to cherish? It’s an honest question that exposes our collective distractions and shortcomings. Grief brings clarity— We all must do better.”
