Sci-fi-loving post-hardcore faction Coheed and Cambria are ushering in their next era by introducing a brand-new villain to their long-running The Amory Wars/Vaxis storyline. The baddie arrives within the group’s new, hard-rocking single, “Blind Side Sonny.”
The song itself plays more to Coheed’s party-rockin’ tendencies than prog, with southern-styled brawn battering against scratchy vocals and hammer-down percussion.
While rooted in Coheed’s interstellar mythology, the music video keeps things little more grounded. As such, you’ll see Coheed playing to a bunch of stampeding fans in a tight backlot scene. Some folks are doing choregraphed routines as Sanchez sings of “dancing through a mental breakdown.” Then, perhaps, we see the skull-faced Sonny crash the party.
“‘Blind Side Sonny’ is a song about revenge,” vocalist-guitarist Claudio Sanchez explained in a statement, adding conspicuously, “What may seem like an innocent choice to someone could be the breeding ground of another’s malicious misunderstanding. Perception can be your worst enemy.”
“Blind Side Sonny” is streaming now, and is said to be “the first taste of the band’s next full body of work.” Coheed’s last album was 2022’s Vaxis Act II: A Window of the Waking Mind.
