Calgary, Alberta hardcore experimenters TRENCH are further twisting up their corrosively heavy approach for their next album, having just unveiled an alt-country-adjacent collaborative track with City and Colour, the Canadian mainstays led by Alexisonfire guitarist-vocalist Dallas Green.
The band’s “DUST TO BONE,” which will appear on forthcoming sophomore LP Between Inverted Worlds, still delivers strernum-fracturing mosh riffs and a concussive blast section, though vocalist Jay Breen’s gruff-throated screams are also complemented by Green’s soft-as-silk crooning mid-song. Likewise, C&C’s pedal-steel player, Matt Kelly, slip-slides supple beauty through the detuned chunk-ups of regular TRENCH guitarist Cole Young.
“I’ve learned that the only way to grow artistically is to learn from mistakes and fully embrace making them,” Breen explained in a statement of the countrified crossover, which you can stream up above.
“‘DUST TO BONE’ is about picking up the pieces of past mistakes and reforming them into something positive. We had the idea of having Dallas Green’s voice on a heavy song, so we set out to create something he would actually find interesting enough to be a part of. The song captivates all aspects of Trench — from emotional and beautiful parts to a crushing breakdown, this song has it all.”
“DUST TO BONE” was preceded by Between Inverted World’s squeal-stomped, and synth-spiked “DIVIDED EXISTENCE” single. The album, which follows 2022 Encased in Chrome EP and 2020 debut full-length Blossom, also features apperances from Cult of Luna’s Johannes Perrson (“MY COLD BLOOD”), Comeback Kid vocalist Andrew Neufeld (“PATH OF PAIN”) and WAKE’s Kyle Ball (“CHROME SACRAMENT”). The record arrives August 16 via New Damage Records.
