Chat Pile want to work you into a sweat. For proof, the Oklahoman noise-rock degenerates have just unveiled a creeped-out workout vid for their latest Cool World preview, “Masc.”
Directed by Stephen Mondics, the music video has got a gross-looking, but also hyper colour-saturated vibe that sort of makes it look like a grimy Neon Films horror flick.
Set in some kind of patriotic, flag-clad bunker, we see folks pounding beers and doing sit-ups in jeans and flannel. A couple performs an uncomfortable waltz, other residents are wildly flexing their muscles near a shrine to a decapitated swine, and someone also shows off their favorite chainsaw.
Musically, Chat Pile scores that weirdness with a lurching noise-rock dread, as well as low-mood lyrics from a narrator describing themselves as “scum.” Per a press release, the band say that “Masc” is the “saddest” Chat Pile song to be released since the group’s movie soundtrack for Tenkiller in 2022.
“Unlike the rest of [Cool World], this song deals with horrors of interpersonal intimacy, yet it is connected with the rest of the record through the overarching theme of oppression, despair and malaise.”
