Coming off the spring release of As I Lay Dying’s “Burden,” their first single in five years, the metalcore veterans have announced a full-blown album is now on the way later this fall. To celebrate the impending arrival of their Through Storms Ahead, the band have issued a heavy comeback in the form of a collaboration with Slaughter to Prevail frontman Alex Terrible and Chelsea Grin’s Tom Barber, titled “We Are the Dead.”
The new single is a fast-and-furiously-paced thrasher, where speed-rammed snare hits and razor-barbed riffage support vocalist Tim Lambesis’ lines about outcasts and rejects “locked away” and rehabilitating themselves on their own terms.
“‘We Are the Dead’ represents the more brutal territory from our new album, spotlighting our thrashier tendencies that we still enjoy mixing in amongst our more melodic sound,” guitarist Phil Sgrosso said of the song in a statement.. “I think this is the meanest we’ve ever gone in terms of aggression, and who better to join us than two of deathcore’s finest, Alex Terrible of Slaughter to Prevail and Tom Barber from Chelsea Grin.”
The music video finds the group leaning into the heavy arrangement, with Lambesis and guest vocalist Barber locking eyes with the camera as they howl through their respective performances. Terrible isn’t exactly on-screen, though we do see his demonic mask pop up a couple of times. You can check it out for yourself up above.
As I Lay Dying’s Through Storms Ahead is out November 15th via Napalm Records. As previously reported, AILD’s current lineup finds Lambesis and Sgrosso joined by bassist Ryan Neff, drummer Nick Pierce and guitarist Ken Susi.
