Revolver are celebrating Mastodon’s 25th anniversary with a new collector’s issue dedicated to the band. To help us salute the mighty Atlanta outfit, we reached out to a number of famous fans to get their picks for their favorite Mastodon song — including Gojira vocalist-guitarist Joe Duplantier
Across their many albums, EPs, B-sides, bonus tracks and more, Mastodon’s quarter-century run has produced plenty of classic tunes thus far. Truly, the band’s entire catalog can be labeled essential listening, especially to Gojira vocalist-guitarist Joe Duplantier — a longtime fan who recently confessed to Revolver that picking one solitary number as the ultimate Mastodon statement would be incredibly hard for him to do.
“Mastodon is one of my favorite bands of all time,” he said. “There’s gems on every single album.” As such, Duplantier has dished on a handful of favorites that have blown him away over the years.
“On Crack the Skye, ‘Oblivion’ was the first song that I was like, ‘OK, I love this band.’ Crack the Skye was something else.
“We toured with them when they were promoting Once More ‘Round the Sun. ‘High Road’ is such a masterpiece.
“It’s just such a trip to listen to their albums. There’s one on the latest album, Hushed and Grim, ‘Peace and Tranquility.’ I love ‘Jaguar God’ off Emperor of Sand, too. One that touches my heart very much is ‘Roots Remain.’ It’s so emotional. They invited me to sing ‘Blood and Thunder,’ with them on the previous tour that we did together [in 2023].
“I love all of their stuff, really.”
