The Grammy hardware has been handed out, and the award for 2025’s Best Metal Performance category has officially been given to Gojira. The band picked up the honor at the 67th annual Grammy Awards for their earth-shaking, internet-breaking Olympics anthem (“Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!).”
The awards ceremony was held tonight (February 2nd) at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, and Gojira were there in person to pick up their trophy, joined by opera singer Marina Viotti and Composer & Musical Director for Paris 2024 Ceremonies Victor Le Masne, their collaborators on the song.
As previously reported, the other nominees included a viral hardcore crossover between Knocked Loose and Poppy (“Suffocate”), Spiritbox’s second Grammy nominated rager (“Cellar Door”), an Invincible Judas Priest standout (“Crown of Horns”) and another 72 Seasons cut from last year’s Grammy winners, Metallica (“Screaming Suicide”).
While many of this year’s Best Metal Performance contenders had received Grammy noms in years past, Knocked Loose received their first-ever nomination for “Suffocate,” although it should be noted that Poppy had previously been saluted in the same category by the Grammys for her 2020 solo song “Bloodmoney.”
Regardless, Knocked Loose dubbed “Suffocate” “the heaviest song ever nominated for a Grammy” in the lead up to the show, and it’s hard to argue with that.
