Following the 2025 release of Failure’s career-tracing documentary, the cult space-rock trio have now announced the launch time of their first album in over four years: Location Lost. The band’s seventh LP is out later this spring, and features a collaboration with longtime fan, Paramore vocalist and solo singer-songwriter Hayley Williams.
Failure confirmed their return earlier today (February 17th) by releasing a music video for the new album’s “The Air’s on Fire.” The song finds the band leaning into echo-caked moodiness, drummer Kelli Scott rumbling out beats as guitarist Ken Andrews makes hospital allusions and croons health-questioning lines (“It’s never felt this way before Things don’t work like they did before”). The performance-style video likewise features silhouettes of IVs coming in-and-out of focus behind Andrews.
A press release explains that Andrews experienced a serious back injury shortly after completing work on the band’s 2025 documentary Every Time You Lose Your Mind. While the operation was said to be successful, “the recovery was not.” “The Air’s on Fire” is Andrews’ reflection on the medical trauma, including a period where he struggled to breathe on his own.
“That song is directly about my surgery and waking up,” he said in a statement. “I basically coded. Everything was spinning. I kept saying, ‘Turn the air on. I’m fine—just take me home.’ I was definitely not fine.”
As for Location Lost as a whole, the band’s next album, which follows 2021’s Wild Type Droid, will be released April 24th under a partnership between Failure Records/Arduous Records/Virgin Music Group. “It’s very different,” Edwards explains of the upcoming release’s sonic aesthetic, adding, “There are sounds and parts that really don’t have any precedence within the Failure world.”
The record features Williams — who’d previously appeared in Every Time You Lose Your Mind, covered Failure’s “Stuck on You” with Paramore in the Aughts, and likewise performed a live cover of “Daylight” with Andrews last year — on “The Rising Skyline.”
