Last month, DoFlame — the free-wheeling hardcore outfit masterminded by 21-year-old Canadian Mateo Naranjo — dropped the raucous single “Can’t Stand No One,” the project’s debut release for Blue Grape Music (Code Orange, GEL). Today (August 22nd), Naranjo is back with another new song, “Fastlanes,” as well as the news of DoFlame’s upcoming second album, BENT.
Whereas “Can’t Stand No One” represents the project’s more straightforward and aggro hardcore side, “Fastlanes” takes a more adventurous and experimental approach. It’s catchy and melodic, kinda dancey and hip-hop, but still punk at heart.
In addition to masterminding the band, Naranjo has also spearheaded OFFLEASH, a collective of friends and collaborators who do everything from filming skate videos and music videos, to designing and manufacturing clothing, to hosting shows and community BBQs around Toronto.
“I just wanted to make some kind of central hub for everyone to join in and identify with,” Naranjo commented of the collective. “I wanted kids to see that you can do cool things, you can make cool things, you don’t just have to sit around or party. I want to document this scene we have and show the world through our eyes what’s happening with our friends and our city.”
