Deftones officially kicked off their private music era in Vancouver, BC last Friday (August 22nd), bringing songs from their latest album to the stage for the very first time — along with some of the alt-metal act’s most beloved hits.
The band’s show at Rogers Arena was mounted the same day that private music hit stores and streamers. The headlining set — which followed performances from Phantogram and Barbarians of California — began with all-timers “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)” and “My Own Summer (Shove It),” but then Chino Moreno and Co. thrust into the new record’s bombastic “my mind is a mountain.” Later in the night, they hit stage debuts of “infinite source” and “milk of the madonna.”
Mid-way through the set, Deftones dedicated Koi No Yokan‘s “Entombed,” which they hadn’t performed live since 2017, to a dear friend: departed former Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds, who’d passed away in a motorcycle accident earlier that week. The former tourmates had previously performed at Rogers Arena in 2010 when Mastodon and Deftones were out on the road supporting Alice in Chains.
Across a 20 song setlist, Deftones’ most recent Vancouver show and summer tour opener brought out cuts from several albums, including Adrenaline’s “7 Words,” White Pony essential “Change (In the House of Flies”), Diamond Eyes “Sextape,” Ohms’ “Genesis” and more.
